For anyone following the saga of the Russian ship (Akademik Shokalskiy) trapped in the ice in Antarctica here is an update. It comes bearing helicopter pr0n in the form of a Kamov KA32A11BC (kindly labeled on the front door for easy ID). The Chinese ship (Xue Long) supplied a helicopter that ferried the scientists and passengers off of the Russian ship that is trapped in the ice. The crew of the Russian ship has stayed with the ship and will wait for the ice to break up. This should happen as it is summer in Antarctica, but how long it will take depends on the weather. The passengers were brought to the Australian ice breaker (Aurora Australis) which will take them back to Australia after completing their resupply mission to one of the Antarctic research stations. The Aurora Australis was making its way out of the heavy ice when the Xue Long asked that they stand by for assistance as the Chinese ship is worried that they may have problems moving through the heavy ice. Currently the Australians are standing by ~15 nautical miles away from the Chinese. The Xue Long is planning to attempt their escape from the ice on Saturday when tide conditions are favorable to their direction of movement.
